The Bicycle Hotel & Casino (commonly, ’The Bike’) is a pokercardroom in California.[1]
Founded by George Hardie Sr. in 1984, located in Bell Gardens, California, The Bicycle Casino offers a selection of poker games and Asian games, with a wide range of limits. The casino features games including: Blackjack, Texas Hold ’Em, Seven Card Stud, Omaha hold ’em, Mexican Poker, Pai Gow Poker, Three Card Poker and Baccarat (card game).
Financing to build the original Bicycle Club casino was provided by Sam Gilbert, who allegedly used money partially obtained from laundering drug money.[2] The casino is home to the Legends of Poker, a tournament series established in 1995 that now includes a stop on the World Poker Tour. Prior to the Legends, the casino’s main tournament series was called the Diamond Jim Brady.[3]Seizure and indictment[edit]
In 1987, Sam Gilbert was the subject of a federal investigation into money laundering and racketeering charges. According to the investigation, a scheme to launder the money received from smuggling marijuana was put together to finance the construction of the Bicycle Casino in Bell Gardens, California.[2][4] According to one criminal complaint,
’[Sam Gilbert] a wealthy Los Angeles businessman, was the first Gilbert to establish ties with the Kramer family when he befriended Benjamin Kramer’s father, Jack Kramer, in 1978. At that time, Jack Kramer and Sam Gilbert came up with the idea of building a legal card club for the purposes of laundering Benjamin Kramer’s dirty money. By 1983, Sam Gilbert was in contact with David Pierson, who was himself thinking of building a card club and was looking for legitimate investors. Pierson gave Sam Gilbert a prospectus, Sam liked what he saw, and Sam agreed to arrange the financing for the project in return for a sixty percent share of Pierson’s ownership interest in the Club.’[5]
Gilbert was indicted in Miami 4 days after his death.[6] His son Michael also was indicted.
The U.S. Government seized the casino in April, 1990, after a jury found that $12 million of the $22 million used in its construction came from Florida drug smugglers.[7] The club’s profits were frozen and placed in a special U.S. Marshals account until the court held a civil hearing to determine which partners knew that the club was built with drug money.
George Hardie and The Park Place Associates ownership were exonerated in 1990, and they regained their 35% stake.[8]

In July 1991 a Florida federal judge ruled that at least one of the partners, former Los Angeles Westside banker M. Dale Lyon, knew about the club’s financing. Eight other partners in the LCP Associates, the partnership named for Lyon, Coyne and Pierson, agreed to forfeit portions of their interest in the club before the civil hearing began. LCP partners Julianne Coyne and former California Assemblyman David C. Pierson settled before the civil hearing. In 1991, they agreed to give up about half of their interest in LCP, which had a 65% stake in the casino.[7]
By the time it sold its share of the casino in 1996, the US government had made tens of millions of dollars in profit from its share of the casino. As a partner in the club, the government also contributed to political campaigns to defeat the proposal to build a rival card club in Orange County.[9]2017 raid[edit]
The casino was again raided by federal authorities citing money laundering as a part of an ongoing investigation into some players using the casino to exchange “dirty money” for chips, then turn cashing those in for “clean money.”[10]Live at the Bike[edit]
The Bicycle Hotel & Casino was the first brick and mortar casino to broadcast a live poker cash game over the Internet in a program known as Live at the Bike.[11] It runs five nights a week, and features poker pros, celebrities and regular cash grinders. Things escalated quickly and my first half was Augusta 2009 and my first full was Louisville 2011. Since 2007 I’ve been chasing my dream of qualifying for Kona. 12/1/2016 At about mile 8 during Kona is when I knew I’d be signing up for Ironman Cozumel. I was running what felt like my “normal” Ironman 7:00 pace…but could barely keep it below 8:00s. I knew my run fitness wasn’t back yet (I did take 9 months of no running, and was only on my 4th month back), so figured I’d stay as strong as I could in the moment and hope that 7 more weeks of training could bring my “run” back.
Since this is just the pre-race report, I won’t get into too much detail about how my run played out on race day, but let’s just say that my training indicated I should have been around a 3:10.
Ryan and I raced Ironman Cozumel in 2014 after we both had frustrating performances in Kona 7 weeks prior. Mine was frustrating because I gave up mentally on the bike, Ryan’s was frustrating because he got a penalty on the bike (yep, the most honest guy in the world gets a BS penalty when guys suck off of HIS wheel…). So, we signed up for Ironman Cozumel for redemption, and hopefully to earn our Kona slots.
​Long story short, we both walked away from Ironman Cozumel 2014 with our 2015 Kona tickets punched and shiny new PRs in the swim, bike (for Ryan), AND run. Coz was good to us!
​After we both finished slightly lower than we had hoped in Kona this year (Ryan due to his mechanical that cost him the overall amateur win, me due to just not having my run fitness back yet), we decided that we’d give Cozumel another go in 2016. We didn’t really tell too many people…because, really, who does 4(ish) Ironmans in one year except for the pros?
Happy (elated) but hoping to be closer together next time..​For me personally, it’s hard to do an Ironman during the school year because missing one day of class time with my students is like missing one full week at any other job in my mind. It’s just hard on me, it’s hard on my kids, and I am just the type of person that hates relying on others to help me out (even though my sub is always the best there isJ). But, after coming off of such a long time of being injured, I knew I had to “strike while the *iron* is hot” (get it?!) and capitalize on my fitness (and not being injured), so we signed up for Ironman Cozumel.
Ryan once again coached me on the run portion, really helping me dial in what we both hoped would be Ironman pace once again. I think I had one bad workout in the 7 weeks between Kona and Cozumel, so I definitely thought my run fitness was back. I’ll go into more detail in the actual race recap, but let me just say here that after coming back from 9 months of no running, expectations should not be as high as I held them, despite having phenomenal workouts. Pure running fitness versus running after an 2.4-mile swim and 113-mile bike (Cozumel is 1 mile long on the bike) is just simply not the same thing. Lesson learned.
I bumped my watts up on the bike (since all rides were done on the trainer thanks to our lovely Chicago weather!) and was feeling stronger than ever. My swim workouts were kind of a hit or miss depending on the day, but I kept reminding myself of how much progress I had made on the swim from May (IMTexas) to July (IMLake Placid) and July to October (Kona) and kept those negative thoughts at a distance.
Fortunately for this school teacher, we had parent/teacher conferences the Monday and Tuesday before race day, so Ryan and I left bright and early on Wednesday morning.
​The travel to Cozumel is quite long:
We flew from O’Hare to Cancun (3.5 hour flight). Then, we took a bus from Cancun to Playa del Carmen (~1hour). Finally, we took a ferry from Playa del Carmen to Cozumel (~45min-50min). Our flight left at 7:05am, and we arrived at our AirBnB at 3:00pm local time (2:00pm Chicago time).
​After getting all checked in with our AirBnB host, Ryan put together our bikes while I unpacked. We hit up the Mega (grocery store) and decided to use today as a day off after being exhausted from the travel. We ended the night with a stop at Palmero’s, a restaurant close to our place followed by a fun light/water show. As tired as we thought we were, we had a tough time sleeping. Luckily, our place had Netflix so we watched the first episode of Stranger Things before heading to bed.
Thanksgiving (Thursday) started off with a late morning wakeup. After sleeping for almost 10 hours (!!!!), we decided to go to our favorite coffee shop from our trip two years back. It once again did not disappoint. Ryan did some coaching work, I did some school work, all while sipping on delicious lattes. By that time, it was nearing noon when packet pickup would begin, so we headed over to the Convention Center. The expo for an Ironman in Mexico is so tiny compared to one in the States that we were in and out in no time. ​We then headed to La Cuisine as we hadn’t really eaten much all day. There was a Thanksgiving special, but I of course opted for breakfast instead. For $9, I got a coffee, fruit, bread (OMG the best ever), a mini salad and an omelet. I sure do love prices in Mexico.
​After our food settled a bit, we rode our bikes to Chankanaab Beach, where Transition 1 is set up (swim exit). Since we didn’t feel like paying $20+ each to get into the beach, we found our own little open area and took turns getting swims in. We rode our bikes back to our place, and headed out for a run. Those 5 miles felt like the longest 5 miles ever (until race day!), so I was lucky to have Ryan chatting away as I was suffering to keep up. I just hoped my legs would come around in a few days.
We once again ended our day with some fabulous food. Kondesa’s is a must-go-to place if you’re ever in Cozumel. Their Guak Trio is amazing: regular guacamole, fruit + bacon guacamole and pumpkin seed guacamole—muy deliciouso! For our main meals, Ryan ordered their version of a BBQ Chicken salad and I ordered the Tuna—neither disappointed.
​On our way home, we came across a cute café and stopped for some coffees. The Chocolatte was incredible!! Highly recommend this place to anyone who loves coffee, chocolate, or especially the combination of the two! We ended the night with three more episodes of Stranger Things. This might have been Ryan’s proudest moment of me for the whole trip: taking time away from work and watching tv like a normal person is something he rarely sees me do, so it was fun to “impress” him ;)
Friday: rest day. Ugh. While necessary and important, I hate taking these days.
Luckily, we started it off with an awesome breakfast at Amparo’s. Not only did this cute place offer free bread and “jams” as appetizers before our breakfasts came out, but we also had free refills on coffee (uncommon in Cozumel).
By the way, if you’re looking for good places to eat, use Trip Advisor as that is preferred over Yelp in Cozumel.
We then rented a scooter (for only $28 for the day!) and decided to try out the beach Chen Rio, recommended by our scooter company. The beach was okay, but when we arrived, one of the employees pointed out our scooter appeared to be leaking oil. There was no cell reception at this beach, so we decided we’d grab a quick bite and then head to the next beach to try and call the rental company.
We ordered some food, and MAN, their fish tacos were so good!
​We bypassed the next beach and headed back to our rental company. After being told our scooter was totally fine, we decided to head to Paradise Beach, where we hung out in 2014. ​Most beaches are $20+ per person to get in, but Paradise only charges $3 per person (though asks that you purchase a food or beverage item, all of which are reasonably priced). This beach also offers fun toys in the water for $18/per person, but Ryan snuck in near the end of the day. Only Ryan would be able to make it across the Ninja Warrior type setup in the water: a guy who had been hanging out at the beach all day said Ryan was the first person he saw make it across, and on his second attempt!
Harder than it looks getting from one trampoline to the other!I got my massage on the beach ($30 for 40minutes—you really have to bargain with the locals!) before we headed back to drop off the scooter.
​We ended the night with a meal at Le Chef. Their Lobster Bacon Sandwich is seriously to die for. If you’re not a mayonnaise lover, you can request it without (as we did). They really go out of their way to accommodate all requests here! Unfortunately, it started raining so we had to move inside. We noticed that many restaurants in Cozumel tend to have a small inside eating section that never has guests, but then a big backyard type section that is just beautiful and full of guests. So, don’t let the “lack of customers” fool you if you’re exploring the restaurants in Cozumel!
We once again ended the night with 3 more episodes of Stranger Things. Seriously, if you have Netflix, we highly recommend this series.
Saturday morning brought some race nerves for me.
​Luckily, breakfast at Coz Coffee helped ease those nerves slightly. The Mexican Eggs were light yet filling, and the coffee…. Oh man. So they have this Peanut Butter Coffee. And it’s amazing. You can SMELL the peanut butter from like 500 feet away. It was so delicious. They also offer their Mexican Café de Olla, which is their specialty: spiced coffee with hints of cinnamon, clove, molasses and vanilla. We ordered one hot and one cold, and they were great!
​We headed back to our place to load up our gear to bring to both transitions. We met the other guy who was living in our divided house, Vasili, and chatted with him for awhile. He was doing his first Ironman, so it was fun to talk about the course and just triathlon in general.
We biked down to Chankanaab Beach (~10miles away) and racked our bikes. We were able to get into the beach for free today since we were racing, so took the opportunity to do an easy swim. We then alternated turns running, and my legs felt much better than on Thursday thankfully. We took the shuttle back to transition 2 drop off and left our Run bags there.
We stopped at the Mega for some carbs and electrolytes before making our way back to our place to shower before heading out for dinner.
We went to Guido’s as we had just loved the place back in 2014.
Of course we ordered the bread, but I balanced it out with a “Greens” salad as well. After my filet and Ryan’s Margherita pizza were finished, we headed back to our place to watch the final episode of Stranger Things.
​Unfortunately, Saturday night in Cozumel seems to be the night that live bands play.
Since our place was close to the “downtown” area, we could hear the band pretty well despite having all of the windows closed.
Even worse, the band was playing songs from the 90s/2000s, so of course we recognized each song, which kept us from falling asleep.
Luckily, we had three prior nights of quality sleep, so did not let this phase us one bit.
​Before we knew it, it was time to get up and get ready for the long day ahead..

The Latin American Championship, Sunday’s IRONMAN Cozumel in Mexico attracted a strong field with £100,000 in prize money and a total of six Kona Pro qualifying slots on offer (three male, three female).Pro Men
When the (with the current) opening 3.8km swim starts with Hawaii second placed finisher, Timothy O’Donnell, leading a group to shore in a rapid 39:18, then you know you are likely set for a speedy day, with a flat and fast bike course to follow.
The fastest bike leg of the day came from Michael Weiss (a new bike course record), but with a swim deficit to overcome, he arrived at T2 in second place, alongisde 2013 IRONMAN World Champion, Frederik Van Lierde (BEL), Johann Ackermann (GER) and Manuel Kueng (SUI) for company. Leading the way was Patrik Nilsson (SWE), while Bermuda’s Tyler Butterfield would started the run almost 11 minutes back and outside of the top-10.

Butterfield represented Bermuda at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in both Triathlon and the Marathon, and with a 2:21:47 clocking earlier this year at the Lake Biwa Marathon in Japan, on his day he can produce some superb run splits. Sunday, was one of those days. His halfway time was a remarkable 1:15:39, which had moved him up into second place, now just 1:33 down on Weiss. 5km later he took the lead and extended that to the finish for a stunning 2:38:29 marathon. His finishing time 7:44:01.

Aussie Carrie Lester (eighth in Hawaii this year), had a stellar day in Mexico, leading the swim (45:35) solo, and then never being headed to the finish. She produced the fastest bike split (4:38:38) and the second fastest run split (3:10:26), to finish up with a winning margin of almost 14 minutes over Maja Stage Nielsen (DEN), who was able to pass fellow Dane, Michelle Vesterby.Ironman Cozumel Kona Slots 2018 Youtube

The day started well for Great Britain’s Susie Cheetham. She had been ill in race week, and so was unsure of how she would perform, but would start the run in second place.

Once on the run though, that illness or the heat caught up with her and she was forced out of the race within the first 10km of the run.
Caroline Livesey finished ninth, and with the top-10 positions in the prize money at a Championship event, she’ll be collecting a cheque at today’s awards dinner.

Serbia adopted a new gambling law on November 22. The law aims to reduce the number of illegal operators and tackle the problem of money laundering associated with the industry.
The new law has been welcomed by the trade association JAKTA, who met with the Serbian Gaming Board the day after the legislation was passed. “We are very optimistic,’ said JAKTA president Mirjana Acimovic. “We can see that our conscientious work in gathering the relevant facts about gaming markets in the former Yugoslavia and the rest of Europe has been worthwhile. We compared different national regulatory models and collaborated with relevant partners such as testing laboratories, reputable companies and associations. JAKTA put a lot of effort into lobbying the government for the creation of a well-regulated gaming market.”

The ultimate goal for a slot player is finding a loose machine amidst the vast sea of machines on the casino floor. First, we should define the term loose slot machine. Payback is the overall percentage that a machine will return to the player in the long run. A loose machine is one that is set to pay back a higher percentage than other machines so the term loose would be relative to the other machines in the same casino.
Partition selection (slots) A/B system updates use two sets of partitions referred to as slots (normally slot A and slot B). The system runs from the current slot while the partitions in the unused slot are not accessed by the running system during normal operation. *Loose machines are placed by the entrance. The reasoning behind this myth is that people will see players winning and this will entice them to come into the casino and play. The basis for this myth can probably be traced back to downtown Las Vegas where the casinos were in walking distance of each other. People walking down the street could see the players winning at the slots and walk into the casino. Most of the new mega-resorts have multiple entrances so I would doubt the validity of this myth.
*Machines near the table games are tight. The reasoning behind this myth is that the noise of the machines will distract the table game players. Another reason is that a table game player will be tempted to play any coins they have when they leave the table on their way to the cashier’s cage.
*Machines near the end of the row are loose. The reasoning behind this myth is that players seeing other players win will be likely to go down into the row to play the machines.
*Machines near the showroom and buffet are tight. The reasoning behind this myth is that players waiting in line for a show or for the buffet are a captive audience. They may be tempted to play a few coins to kill time while they wait. The machines are tight because they can’t leave the area to play other machines.
*Machines near the casino cage are loose. The reasoning behind this myth is that the casino wants you to see people winning while you are waiting in line. This will entice you to play more.
*Round Carousals of machines are looser that rows of machines. The reasoning behind this myth is that the carousels can bee seen from any direction in the casino. They want to put the loose machines where they winners are highly visible. Think Like a Casino Executive
One of the problems with the myths is that no two casinos are the same. Each casino has a VP of slots who makes the decision about the placement of the machines. Try to think like a casino executive. Where would you put the loose machines?
Casino executives have heard all the myths concerning the placement of loose machines that the players have. If I were the manager I would not put a loose machine on the aisle. I would bury it further down the row. Think of this as reverse psychology. If I know where the players think the loose machines are I would want to put tight machines there instead. Be Realistic
Unless you play an exorbitant amount of slots, the chances of really identifying a loose slot machine will be slim. You could just as easily have a very lucky winning session on a low payback machines as a losing session on a machine with a high payback percentage. You might never play enough to be sure.
This does not mean you should give up your quest to find loose slot machines. Playing different machines in search of a loose one will add some variety to your slot play. You might not find a loose slot but you might find a new game that you enjoy playing. The hunt for a loose slot machine can be fun and that’s what casino gambling should be.

Don Rickles, who comically insulted Las Vegas audiences for seven decades and had a prominent role in Casino, died Thursday in Los Angeles. He was 90.
